Cures for the Colors: Helping hundreds each year.

At Southeastern Medical Oncology Center, we know cancer well. We see every day how it affects people, families, lives, work, income, finances and so much more. As caring people and experienced cancer-care professionals, we see and are deeply affected by cancer’s impact… and we’re committed to helping our patients, friends and neighbors through their fight.

A non-profit foundation dedicated to eastern NC.

For these reasons, in 2011 we launched our own not-for-profit organization to help provide much-needed assistance to cancer patients in eastern North Carolina while they are in treatment. This non-profit (501c.3) tax-exempt organization, named Southeastern Cancer Care, is better known as Cures for the Colors, the name used for its patient-assistance events and programs.

Each year, Cures for the Colors organizes walks, runs, motorcycle rides and other events to boost cancer awareness and to raise funds for financial assistance to patients. Funding also comes from sponsorships in our memorial plaques, proceeds from the sale of shirts and hats (and other items), and from grants and generous donations from individuals, families, organizations and businesses.

100% of funds go to patient support.

Cures for the Colors is 100% dedicated to helping eastern NC cancer patients and their families in the form of financial assistance to help with life’s basic needs. These can include food cards, utility bills, gas cards for required transportation, etc. Assistance is only for cancer patients in eastern NC who live east of I-95 or for whom I-95 is within the borders of their county. Applicants will also need to provide proof of a cancer diagnosis and be on active chemotherapy or radiation treatment (or within 3 months of surgery).

When we say 100% dedicated, we mean it literally. While it isn’t common — indeed, because it isn’t common — Cures for the Colors spends every dime it collects on patients’ needs. We run 100% on volunteer contributions of time, money and resources. With this all-in approach, we’ve been able to make an important, positive difference in the lives of as many as 400+ cancer patients per year. And we look forward to growing our funding and maintaining our 100% commitment to helping cancer patients in need.

Get help… or get involved to help others!

If you’re an eastern NC cancer patient in treatment who is in need of financial assistance, we encourage you to apply for help with the patient advocates at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center. We also welcome donations and volunteer help from friends, loved ones, concerned individuals and groups or businesses who share our commitment to helping the people of eastern North Carolina.
